About this spot

Affectionately known as "Keisan," this shrine is the chief deity of Echizen Province and has long protected Tsuruga as the supreme guardian shrine of the Hokuriku region. The brilliant vermillion torii gate is counted among Japan's three greatest wooden torii gates, standing majestically as a must-see photo spot. Within the grounds you'll find a natural spring known as the Water of Longevity, as well as a statue and poetry stone of the haiku master Matsuo Basho, who visited Tsuruga during his travels. Morning prayers in the crisp air offer the perfect serene beginning to your day.

Tips

The grounds are flat and easy to navigate with a stroller. Free parking for visitors is available. The torii gate faces the street, so be careful of traffic when taking photos. Located in the city center, it's just a short drive to Nihonkai Sakana-gai.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Around 9 a.m., there are fewer visitors, making it perfect for a peaceful and unhurried visit.
