Kanayama Shrine (金櫻神社)

About this spot

Enshrined at the summit of Mtake, Kanayama Shrine is an ancient temple that reveres Mount Kimpou as its divine object. The gorge itself was once said to be the approach to this shrine, making a visit here the perfect way to conclude the gorge hike. Known as the birthplace of crystal, the shrine is famous for its 'crystal amulets.' The sanctuary's Ukon cherry tree, with its distinctive pale golden blossoms in spring, is a rare variety. The shrine building at the end of the cedar-lined stone steps exudes a solemn, mountain-blessed atmosphere.

Tips

The waterfall area of Shosenkyo is about a 5-minute drive away, with free parking near the grounds. The approach has many stone steps, so it's best to keep your comfortable hiking shoes on throughout. For receiving crystal amulets at the shrine office, visit with time to spare before evening closing. On clear days, Mount Fuji can be seen from certain spots within the grounds.

Best time to visit

Approximately 45 minutes. Evening light filtering through the cedars creates a solemn atmosphere.
