Walk together around the sacred giant camphor tree and pray for longevity and good relationships

About this spot

A shrine long revered in Atami as a deity of good fortune and prosperity. The main attraction is the giant sacred camphor tree, designated as a National Natural Monument. This ancient giant is said to be over two thousand years old; tradition holds that walking around its trunk adds years to your life, and that wishes whispered while circling the tree will come true. The well-maintained grounds, surrounded by greenery, invite peaceful contemplation, and tea houses and café spaces along the approach path offer pleasant rest stops. Starting your day with morning prayers in the crisp air sets a wonderful tone for the entire day.

Tips

Easily accessible, about a 5-minute walk from JR Kinomiya Station (JR來宮駅). Entry is free, and the stone-paved grounds are easy to navigate. Early morning hours have fewer visitors, allowing ample time for photos in front of the giant tree. If you'd like an ema (wooden prayer tablet) or omamori (amulet), visit within the office hours. Weekends during daytime can be crowded, so early morning is recommended.

Best time to visit

Plan for approximately 1 hour. Before 9 AM is ideal—fewer visitors and the dappled sunlight through the trees creates the most pleasant atmosphere.
