Observe giraffes and lions up close in the African Savanna Zone

Opened in 1915, Tennoji Zoo is the third-oldest zoo in Japan with over 100 years of history. Located in a corner of Tennoji Park, the approximately 11-hectare grounds feature about 180 species of animals. The highlight is the African Savanna Zone, where ecological exhibits using natural terrain downplay barriers, allowing you to observe giraffes grazing and lions relaxing as if you're peering into a corner of the savanna itself. Other popular exhibits include the Reptile Ecology Hall and displays of hippos and polar bears. The spacious, free-spirited atmosphere makes you forget you're in the city center. For elementary school students, simply hand them a park map and ask "Which animal next?" and the morning will fly by.

Tips

Accessible within 5-10 minutes' walk from Osaka Metro Dōbutsuenmae or Ebisu-cho stations, and also from the "Tenshibagate" on the JR Tennoji station side. The zoo is closed Mondays (or the following weekday if Monday is a holiday), so note the day. The grounds have little elevation and are easy to navigate with a stroller, with rest areas and shops available. Entry right after opening is recommended when animals are most active.
