Visit an Historic Temple Where the Takogejizo Legend Lives On, and Touch the History of the Castle Town
About this spot
A Pure Land Buddhist temple affectionately known as "Takogejizo" (蛸地蔵), which gave its name to Takogeijzo Station on the Nankai Main Line—a legend uniquely associated with Kishiwada. According to tradition, when Kishiwada Castle was besieged and nearly fell during the Sengoku period, a priest riding a giant octopus and countless octopuses appeared and repelled the enemy, saving the castle. Later, a stone statue of Jizo Bodhisattva, presumably the one pulled from the castle moat, came to be enshrined at this temple. The Jizo Hall on the temple grounds stands impressively and is said to be among Osaka Prefecture's largest. This unique tale of an octopus saving a castle is perfect conversation material for friends on a town walk. Located along the Kishu Kaido (紀州街道) where old castle town scenery still lingers, you can enjoy both the visit and exploring the historic streets nearby.
Tips
About a 3-minute walk from Takogeijzo Station on the Nankai Main Line, with free admission. The grounds are compact, making it easy to stop by during a casual town walk. If using the train, don't miss the Takogeijzo Station building, an impressive Art Deco structure with beautiful stained glass depicting the takogejizo legend. Bring small coins for offerings.

Approximately 40 minutes. A good time to visit during an afternoon town walk, where you can rest a moment in the quiet grounds.
