Grind Your Own Matcha with a Stone Mill, Then Enjoy a Fresh Bowl with Sweets
About this spot
An experiential tea atelier operated by Fukujuen, a long-established Kyoto tea purveyor founded in 1790 (Kansei 2), located along the banks of the Uji River. The signature stone mill matcha-grinding experience lets you challenge yourself to create your own matcha by grinding tencha (shade-grown tea leaves) with a traditional stone mill—"gorigori" as you turn it. You'll hear that the slower you grind, the finer your matcha becomes, naturally putting everyone into a focused mindset. The ultimate reward comes when you whisk your freshly ground matcha yourself and enjoy it with sweets. The shop is stocked with Uji tea, matcha sweets, and tea utensils—perfect for selecting final souvenirs. With the Asagiri Bridge and Uji River views nearby, you can linger in the gentle afterglow of a full day immersed in matcha.
Tips
About 8 minutes' walk from Keihan Uji Station, located along the east bank of the Uji River. Experience menus like the stone mill matcha grinding have limited capacity, so advance booking through the official website or phone is recommended. Experience final registration times are often set early, so if you're visiting later in the afternoon, confirm the session time when booking. Matcha powder may dust your clothing, so consider bringing a light jacket if wearing white or pale colors.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. An evening session is recommended as a fitting finale to your matcha-filled day. Confirm the final experience registration time in advance.
