Walk through the cedar-shaded approach path and pause at the mystical shrine by Kibune Stream
About this spot
This is the original site of Kibune Shrine, located about 15 minutes' walk along the cedar-lined approach path beside Kibune Stream from the Main Shrine. According to legend, Tamayori-hime, mother of Emperor Jinmu, sailed up the river in a yellow boat and enshrined the water deity at this location, the origin of Kibune Shrine. The "boat-shaped stone" at the shrine grounds is said to be where the yellow boat was covered with stone. Directly beneath the main hall lies a massive dragon cave, counted as one of Japan's three great dragon caves and regarded as a premier power spot. The shrine grounds, wrapped in deep cedar groves, are utterly silent—a world away from the bustle around the main shrine, where only the murmur of the stream and bird songs echo. This is the perfect place to rest your legs after the hike and reflect on your day in clear, pure air.
Tips
About 15 minutes' walk from the Main Shrine; the path passes the Chusha (middle shrine), known for matchmaking, so the three shrine pilgrimage is recommended. The approach path is gentle but has few street lights, and it darkens quickly as day wanes, so complete your visit while it's still light. Return via the "Kibune" bus stop to Kibune-guchi Station, then take the Eizan Railway back toward Demachi-Masugata Shoiji. Evening buses get crowded, so it's reassuring to check the timetable in advance.
Best time to visit
Allow about 45 minutes. Darkness falls early in the evening, so aim to complete your shrine visit and begin your descent by around 4 p.m.
