Pass Through the Vermillion Torii Gate and Ōtemon Gate, Then Pay Your Respects at the Spacious Grounds

A shrine founded in 1895 (Meiji 28) to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the transfer of the capital to Heian-kyō, its vermillion-painted main buildings recreate the Chōdō-in (Imperial Audience Hall) of the Heian Palace at approximately 5/8 scale, creating a striking silhouette against the blue sky. The grand torii gate towering over the main approach, standing approximately 24 meters tall, is the symbol of the Okazaki area—its impressive scale never fails to draw excited shouts from children. Beyond the Ōtemon Gate lies a spacious grounds of white sand where you can pay your respects in comfort without worrying about bumping into crowds, even with small children. The sacred garden surrounding the main building is a strolling landscape garden with a pond spanning approximately 10,000 tsubo (about 3.3 hectares) and designated as a National Scenic Beauty. The walking paths that circle the seasonal flowers and pond are a must-see if time allows—their beauty is truly exceptional. Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Higashiyama Station on the Tozai Line, or directly accessible via bus to 'Okazaki Park / Museum of Art / Heian Shrine' stop. Admission to the grounds is free; the sacred garden costs an additional ¥600 for adults. The grounds have few steps and are easy to navigate with a stroller, though the white sand gravel can slow down wheels—a baby carrier is reassuring. Early morning visits before tour buses arrive offer peaceful, unhurried worship.
