Explore the Elephant Forest and Giraffe House, Then Enjoy a Leisurely Lunch at a Café Inside the Zoo

About this spot

Opened in 1903 (Meiji 36), this is the zoo with the second-longest history in Japan after Ueno Zoo. Though located within the city, the zoo's exhibits have been completely refreshed through renovation. Popular attractions include the 'Elephant Forest' where a herd of Asian elephants roam, the 'African Savanna' where you can look up close at giraffes, and the 'Beast World' where tigers and lions come into dramatic view. The compact layout makes it easy for young children to complete a full circuit without strain—the size is just right for family visits. There's an on-site café with a library, as well as a retro Ferris wheel and mini amusement park area. You can observe animals, ride attractions, and enjoy a leisurely lunch break all in one outing.

Tips

About a 7–10-minute walk from either Higashiyama Station or Keage Station on the Tozai Line; just a short walk from the Kyocera Museum of Art. Admission is ¥750 for adults; children through junior high school are free—a wonderful perk for families. If you plan to have lunch at the café, arriving around 11 AM before seats fill up is recommended. Strollers are allowed (rental available), and there are diaper-changing facilities and nursing rooms.

Best time to visit

Plan for about 2 hours 15 minutes. It's ideal to arrive during the morning when animals are most active, then spend leisurely time including lunch.
