The ruins of Izushi Castle, built by Koide Yoshihide in 1604, stand as the symbolic landmark of the castle town known as 'the Little Kyoto of Tajima.' Stone walls, reconstructed corner towers on the east and west, a castle gate, and a bridge all convey the atmosphere of bygone days. The highlight is the approach to Ariko Inari Shrine on the mountainside, lined with rows of vermillion torii gates. As you pass through the tunnel of torii gates and climb the stone steps, a panoramic view of the castle town's traditional tiled roofs spreads before you—a perfect sight to begin your journey. The castle is also renowned as a cherry blossom viewing spot in spring, where the competition between stone walls, blossoms, and vermillion torii gates is spectacular. This is an ideal spot for friends to take photos together and warm up for your castle town stroll.
Tips
Izushi has no train station; take the Zentan Bus from JR Toyooka or Yoka Station for about 30 minutes to 'Izushi,' then walk about 5 minutes from the bus stop. If driving, there are several paid municipal parking lots in the area. Viewing is free and open from early morning. The stone steps of the Inari approach are fairly steep, so wear comfortable sneakers.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early morning means the approach is less crowded and you can enjoy the castle town panorama in fresh, clear air.
