A famous temple with a renowned prayer for safe childbirth—pay respects at the blue five-story pagoda and flower-filled temple grounds
About this spot
A major temple of the Shingon Nakayama-ji School, said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, and the 24th pilgrimage site of the Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage Sites of Western Japan. This historic temple has long been revered by both imperial family and commoners as the 'Kannon of Safe Childbirth.' What stands out most is the eye-catching five-story pagoda 'Seiryu-to' with its vivid blue roof. Rebuilt for the first time in approximately 400 years, its striking appearance against the blue sky makes it an ideal photo spot. The temple grounds are enhanced by plum groves and seasonal flowers, and the approach is equipped with escalators and elevators. It is surprisingly comfortable to walk around for a temple known for its stone steps. Strolling slowly through the grounds together in the early morning air, receiving a goshuin (temple stamp), will give your day a refreshing start.
Tips
About 1 minute on foot from Hankyu Takarazuka Line Nakayama-Kannon Station, or about 10 minutes on foot from JR Nakayama-ji Station. The temple grounds have escalators and elevators, so you can comfortably explore even if you have difficulty with slopes or stone steps. The 'Dog Day' (inunohi) for prayers of safe childbirth is particularly crowded, so early mornings on weekdays are recommended for a peaceful visit. Don't forget your goshuin notebook if you want to collect temple stamps.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour required. Early morning, right after opening, is peaceful and ideal for photographing the Seiryu-to without worrying about crowds.
