Slowly appreciate the National Treasure and Important Cultural Property Buddha statues from the Asuka to Kamakura periods at the Nara Buddha Statue Hall

About this spot

A national museum specializing in Buddhist art, with the 'Nara Buddha Statue Hall' displaying nearly 100 Buddha statues from the Asuka to Kamakura periods. The main building itself, constructed in Western-style architecture in 1894 and designated an Important Cultural Property, is a sight to behold. Row after row of National Treasure and Important Cultural Property-class Buddha statues set against a solemn space is breathtaking. Thoughtful lighting and explanations allow children viewing Buddha statues for the first time to enjoy comparing their facial expressions and poses. The underground corridor connecting the East and West New Buildings and the Nara Buddha Statue Hall is a free zone accessible without an entrance ticket and also features a museum shop and restaurant. The museum is also famous for hosting the Shosoin Exhibition each autumn. The location, accessible while viewing Nara Park's deer, is also an asset.

Tips

About 15 minutes on foot from Kintetsu Nara Station and located within Nara Park; also walkable from Todai-ji Temple and Kasuga Taisha. Admission is ¥700 for adults, with free entry for high school students and younger—a welcoming fee structure for families. Closed Mondays in principle (or the following day if Monday is a holiday); check opening dates in advance. The autumn Shosoin Exhibition period is very crowded, so other times are better if you want to view at leisure. The interior is easy to navigate with a stroller, and the underground corridor has rest areas.

Best time to visit
