Located at approximately 600 meters elevation in Kami-senbon, this is one of Yoshino Mountain's signature observation points. The view of the great roof of Zaō-dō below, followed by rows of houses in the temple town and layered ridgelines folding endlessly into the distance, is the very "Yoshino Mountain-like" composition you've surely seen in posters and photography books. In spring, cherry blossoms wave from the middle senbon down to the lower senbon like a flowing river, creating truly a once-in-a-lifetime spectacular view. Beyond cherry blossom season, fresh green leaves, autumn foliage, and evening mountain shadows present ever-changing expressions, and since this quiet spot is removed from the approach path's bustle, it's perfect for leisurely time together, tracing the path you've walked in the landscape below. This is a reward-worthy finale vista available only to those who've climbed the slope—a fitting conclusion to your course.
Tips
A 30- to 40-minute walk up the slope continuing from Yoshimizu Shrine to Kami-senbon. The gradient remains steep throughout, so bring water and take breaks as needed. The observation platform is a small roadside space with no shops or restrooms, so it's reassuring to take care of necessities at the approach before heading up. During cherry blossom season, traffic restrictions may be in effect on surrounding roads.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1.5 hours (including the round-trip slope walking). Afternoon light renders Zaō-dō and the ridgeline in three-dimensional relief.
