A museum surrounded by breeding ponds where you can view rare goldfish varieties. A fitting conclusion to your goldfish town stroll

About this spot

A goldfish-specialized museum opened by the fish farm "Yamato Nishikigyo-en," standing in an area surrounded by goldfish breeding ponds. Inside the wooden museum building, you can see rare goldfish varieties like ranchu and water-bubble-eye fish swimming in tanks. The museum also displays ukiyo-e woodblock prints featuring goldfish and historical documents. Admission is free, yet the quality is remarkable—you can feel the passion of a fish farm dedicated solely to goldfish. Yamato Koriyama's goldfish breeding tradition is said to have been introduced when domain lord Yanagisawa Yoshisato transferred here in the Edo period, and it remains a premier production area today. The view of glittering breeding ponds stretching beyond the windows is a sight found nowhere else—a fitting place to conclude the story of this "goldfish town" you've explored since morning.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from Kintetsu Koriyama Station. The route from the castle town to the breeding pond area is full of authentic goldfish-town scenery. Closed Mondays. Admission is free. The surrounding breeding ponds are active workplaces for producers, so refrain from trespassing and observe proper etiquette. There are few shops or vending machines nearby, so bring your own beverages for peace of mind.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. Visiting by around 3 p.m. before closing allows for unhurried appreciation.
