About this spot
Called the "Women's Koyasan" because it has welcomed female worshippers, this is the head temple of the Shingon Muroji sect. Cross the drum bridge, pass through the temple gate, and climb the Yoroi Stone Steps shrouded in cedar groves, and the National Treasure main hall and lecture hall come into view. Beyond stands the National Treasure five-story pagoda, said to be among the smallest outdoor five-story pagodas in Japan, a charming structure whose crimson silhouette against the green is truly the symbol of Muroji. In spring, some 3,000 azaleas line the stone steps in pale pink, and in autumn the entire temple complex is wrapped in autumn foliage—colors befitting the culmination of a flower temple pilgrimage. The temple gate is lined with shops selling wild vegetable buckwheat noodles and the famous grass cakes, making lunch and snacks part of the pleasure. A renowned temple where a couple can take their time savoring the serene beauty of a mountain temple.
Tips
By public transport, about 15 minutes by bus bound for Muroji from Muroguchi-Ono Station on the Kintetsu line. By car, use the paid parking at the temple gate. The temple grounds are a succession of stone steps, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The path to the inner sanctum continues with even longer stone steps, so be mindful of your knees and proceed at a comfortable pace. The grass cakes at the temple gate are popular and sometimes sell out, so buy early if you spot them.

About 2 hours. Have lunch at the temple gate and view the temple before afternoon visitor numbers increase.
