Pay respects at the nationally designated Important Cultural Property main hall of one of Japan's oldest shrines, and greet the sacred chickens in the grounds

One of Japan's oldest shrines, recorded in the Chronicles of Japan (『日本書紀』), this shrine has long been revered as the tutelary deity of the ancient clan Mononobe, drawing the faith of samurai clans. The sacred object is the divine sword, Futo-no-Mitama. The main hall is said to be the oldest existing main hall in Japan and is designated a National Treasure, and passing through the Kamakura-period gate tower (a Designated Important Cultural Property), you'll find yourself in a solemn grounds enveloped in tall cedar trees, where chickens—believed to be divine messengers—peacefully wander. The shrine is also famous for transmitting the National Treasure Seven-Branched Sword (七支刀), said to have been brought from Baekje according to the Chronicles of Japan. As the northern starting point of the Yamabe-no-Michi, it's standard practice for walkers to pray for safe passage for the day before setting out. Tips

From JR and Kintetsu Tenri Station, head east on foot for about 30 minutes, passing through the shopping arcade of Tenri Honten before arriving. The grounds are free to visit and have restroom facilities, making it convenient to prepare before your walk. The free-roaming chickens are divine messengers, so it's courteous not to chase them or feed them. If you're collecting shrine seals (goshuin), this is a good place to start.
