Designated as the mausoleum of Emperor Sujin, the tenth emperor, this massive keyhole-shaped burial mound spans approximately 240 meters and is archaeologically dated to the early 4th century. The mound, nestled at the foot of Ryuo-yama, is surrounded by a water-filled moat, and from the embankment path above, a solemn view spreads before you—the verdant mound reflected in the still water. The essence of the Yamabe-no-Michi is actually walking beside these ancient burial mounds you once saw only in textbooks; their overwhelming scale allows you to tangibly feel the power of the ancient Yamato kingdom. Nearby stands the Kushiyama Mound, and the view across the rice paddies of the Nara Basin from the embankment is magnificent. Tips
Just south of Chorakuji Temple along the Yamabe-no-Michi. As this is a mausoleum managed by the Imperial Household Agency, you cannot enter the railed area; view from the embankment path and pray quietly at the shrine. There are no restrooms or shops nearby, so it's reassuring to use facilities at the Trail Center beforehand. It's also within walking distance of JR Yanagimoto Station, making it possible to visit this site alone.

Allow about 40 minutes. Afternoon light hits the moat water at an angle, creating beautiful reflections ideal for photography
