With a drop of 133 meters and a width of 13 meters at its crest, this colossal waterfall holds the distinction of being Japan's highest single-drop cascade. The waterfall itself is revered as the sacred deity of Hitotsutaki Shrine. As you pass through the torii gate and descend the stone steps, the waterfall appears from among the trees with a thunderous roar and a towering column of white water. Upon paying the entrance fee and reaching the worship platform (mai), you can stand so close to the falls that the mist reaches you—an overwhelming experience. Three breaks in the rocky face at the waterfall's mouth cause the water to divide into three streams, hence its alternate name 'Three-Stream Waterfall.' For centuries, the people of Kumano have recognized divinity in this waterfall and offered their prayers. At the worship area, you can also drink the waterfall's water, said to grant long life and good health, making this a fitting sacred place to pray for a couple's wellness.

Tips

From the Nachi Mountain bus stop, proceed to the Hitotsutaki Shrine entrance. From the torii gate to the worship platform, you'll descend approximately 130 stone steps (and climb them again on your return). Visiting the close-up worship platform and receiving the waterfall's long-life water requires a viewing fee of 300 yen for adults. The platform is occasionally sprayed by mist, so a towel is helpful. The steps are damp and slippery, so wear sturdy, non-slip shoes.
