Walk along the Taizō River where hot water wells up from the riverbed, and rest with foot baths and mountain village scenery
About this spot
A rare hot spring destination nationwide where a source exceeding 70 degrees Celsius wells up from the riverbed of the Taizō River. It's famous for "personal open-air baths" where you can create your own hot spring pool by digging in the riverbed, and in winter (December through late February), a massive open-air bath called "Sennin Bath" (仙人風呂) is created by damming the river. Hot spring inns line the riverside, and the sight of steam rising from the river surface is uniquely atmospheric and found nowhere else. End your day with a riverside foot bath. Soak the feet you've walked on all day, and your weariness will gently dissolve. Surrounded by the gentle sound of the stream and the warmth of the hot spring, sharing travel memories with friends in the late afternoon is truly special.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car or bus from Yunomine Onsen. Since you'll be descending to the riverbed, wear shoes or sandals you don't mind getting wet. Clothing with easy-to-roll-up cuffs is recommended for foot bathing. In winter (December through late February), the free outdoor bath "Sennin Bath" is available—check if the season aligns. Free parking is available along the riverside.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Late afternoon when the slanting light reflects the steam on the river surface is most stunning.
