A spectacular scenic site and Kushimoto's premier landmark designated as a National Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. Forty-odd rock formations of various sizes stretch in a straight line for approximately 850 meters into the sea. Their resemblance to bridge pilings inspired the name, and they are surrounded by the romantic legend of Kobo Daishi attempting to build a bridge in a single night. These dramatic formations were created when magma intruded into fissures in the bedrock; over countless ages, wave erosion wore away the softer portions, leaving only the harder granite—a testament to the sculpting power of Earth itself. The time when morning sunlight silhouettes the rocks against the sky is particularly beautiful and popular among photography enthusiasts as a sunrise spot. At low tide, you can walk closer to the rocks and stroll leisurely with your companion while gazing into tidal pools. This spectacular vista is a fitting beginning to a coastal drive date.

Tips

About 5 minutes by car from JR Kushimoto Station, located along National Route 42. The adjacent Michi-no-Eki Kushimoto Hashigui Iwa rest area offers free parking. If you wish to walk close to the rocks, check the low tide times in advance. The rocks become slippery when wet, so wear sturdy shoes. To catch the sunrise, arrive about 30 minutes before dawn.
