A historic lighthouse that first lit on Meiji 6 (1873), designed by Richard Henry Brunton, the British engineer known as the "Father of Japanese Lighthouses." Standing in pure white at the southern tip of Honshu, it continues to guide ships passing offshore. As one of Japan's rare "climbable lighthouses," ascending the spiral staircase to the top allows you to behold the vast Pacific Ocean in all its glory. The gentle arc of the horizon reveals the curvature of the Earth itself. An adjoining exhibition room showcases the lighthouse's history and equipment, allowing visitors to trace 150 years of support for maritime navigation. Gazing at the great expanse of sea from atop this cape, buffeted by the sea breeze with your companion, is one of this course's finest highlights.

Tips

A viewing contribution fee (¥300 for middle school students and above) is cash-only, so have small change ready. There is paid parking near the lighthouse. The spiral staircase to the top is narrow with steep final steps, so wear sturdy shoes and pants for comfort. The cape is often windy, so secure your hat.
