A museum at Kashino Cape on the eastern tip of Kii Ohshima Island, preserving the memory of the Ertugrul, a warship of the Ottoman Empire (Turkey) that wrecked and sank offshore in 1890. On a stormy night, crew members who scrambled up the cliff calling for help were rescued and cared for by the islanders of Kii Ohshima—a historic rescue that has been passed down as the origin of friendship between Japan and Turkey for over 130 years. The museum displays ship models, relics, and period photographs, allowing quiet reflection on this 130-year-old rescue story. Nearby stand a memorial cenotaph and Kashino Cape Lighthouse, a stone lighthouse designed by Brunton and among Japan's oldest. The deep blue Pacific Ocean viewed from the cliff top leaves a striking impression. Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Kushimoto city center across the Kushimoto Ohashi Bridge (toll-free). The museum is just a short walk from the free parking lot. If you plan to walk the footpaths to Kashino Cape Lighthouse and the cenotaph, allow 20–30 minutes extra and wear comfortable shoes. The museum closes early in the afternoon, so allow ample time for an afternoon visit.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour 30 minutes. Visit in the afternoon when the light beautifully illuminates the deep blue sea, while leaving time before closing.
