A fantastic rock formation designated as a National Natural Monument, with countless large and small holes dotting its entire wall face. The holes, resembling a beehive, were formed when ancient volcanic rocks were eroded by wind and rain over vast stretches of time. The more you look, the more you're drawn into the wonder of nature's sculptural artistry. The rock face towers right beside the road, and you can immediately get close to it once you step out of your car—a major appeal of its accessibility. As you approach, you're overwhelmed by the sheer number and size of the holes, and you can't help but reach for your camera. At the base of the rock stands a small shrine, and there's a local belief that offering perforated stones here cures ear ailments. Next door is a small attached roadside station, marking the beginning of your Koza River scenic rock tour. This impactful first stop is a fitting start to your day with friends.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Kushimoto's downtown along Route 371. The adjacent Roadside Station Mushikui Rock has free parking and restrooms. Admission is free and you can keep your visit short. Since shops and vending machines are sparse along the Koza River ahead, it's recommended to stock up on drinks and use the restroom here.
Best time to visit
About 40 minutes required. A visit first thing in the morning when it's less crowded is recommended as the starting point of your rock-viewing tour
