About this spot
Located in Wakayama-Ura, a scenic site in the Man'yōshū poetry collection where Yamabe no Akahito composed verses beginning with "When the tide fills Wakatsu Bay," the park derives its name "Katao-nami" from the poem's phrase. A narrow sandbar curves seaward, lined with pine forests and long sandy beaches perfect for a seaside walk swept by the sea breeze—an ideal way to conclude your day. The in-park Man'yōshū Hall presents the connections between Wakayama-Ura and the Man'yōshū collection in an easy-to-understand manner, while a grassy plaza allows children to play freely if energy remains. At twilight, the sea and sky take on soft crimson hues, and the views beyond the pine forest truly showcase the scenic beauty that has captivated people since Man'yōshū times. A perfect strolling path for three generations to reflect together on the day.
Tips
From JR Wakayama Station or Nankai Wakayama City Station, take a bus toward the Shin-Wakayama-Ura area and get off at "Furokibashi," then about 10 minutes on foot. Parking is available but can be crowded during summer beach season—note this in advance. Park paths are flat and easy for baby carriages; the Man'yōshū Hall offers free admission, making it a nice rest stop if needed. Wear comfortable walking shoes if heading down to the beach for sand comfort.
Best time to visit
About 1 hour 15 minutes required. Evening light turns the sea beyond the pine forest crimson, making the walk exceptionally pleasant.
