One of the few castles in Japan where the original castle keep has survived since the Edo period, with the keep designated as a national treasure. Built as the residence of the Ii clan over approximately 20 years, the keep retains important cultural properties including the Tenbin Turret and Taiko Gate turret in their original forms. As you pass through the Tenbin Turret with its hanging bridge and climb the stone stairs beyond, the three-tiered, three-story keep looms impressively before you. From the top floor, a dazzling panorama spreads out with glimmering Lake Biwa and the castle town in full view—the sense of accomplishment from climbing the steep stairs delights grandchildren's adventurous spirits. The popular character Hikonyan (ひこにゃん) appears near the castle keep at certain times, making Hikone's symbol a place where three generations—from history-loving grandparents to small children—each find their own enjoyment.

Tips

About a 15-minute walk from JR Hikone Station to the main gate. Since the keep has steep stairs inside where you walk barefoot, wear non-slip socks and bring a bag that keeps your hands free. Baby carriages cannot be brought into the keep, so a baby sling is recommended for small children. The admission ticket (general admission ¥800) includes entry to Genkyuen Garden. Best time to visit

Allow approximately 2 hours. Visiting first thing in the morning right after opening means shorter queues at the keep and you can climb the stone stairs while it's still cool.
