Lunch of Omi Beef in a White-Walled Townscape. A Delightful Time Enjoying Street-Food Sweets

About this spot

A roughly 350-meter street extending southwest from Hikone Castle's Kyobashi, with unified white-walled, black-latticed merchant house-style buildings reminiscent of an Edo period castle town. Along the street, specialty shops selling Omi beef, Japanese confectioneries, preserved goods, and local sake line the thoroughfare, offering an excellent opportunity to sample Omi beef—Japan's representative premium brand beef—for lunch. After your meal, enjoy strolling leisurely with street snacks like Omi beef buns and dango in hand. The wide road is easy to walk, allowing grandparents and grandchildren to walk side by side at a comfortable pace. As you bask in the lingering memories of your castle visit, this is the highlight of the course where three generations can fully savor Hikone's culinary delights.

Tips

The street begins immediately after crossing the Kyobashi gate of Hikone Castle and is within walking distance of Genkyuen. Popular Omi beef restaurants form lines during lunch hours, so arriving right after opening or making a reservation in advance is recommended. The well-maintained flat walkway is easy for baby carriages, and note that some food stalls accept cash only, so bring small change.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. Around 1 p.m., slightly past the noon rush, lunch seating becomes easier to secure.
