Morning Walk at a Temple of the Ōmi Hakkei. Enjoy Lake Biwa Views from Kannon Hall's High Ground

Officially known as Nagara-san Onjoji, this is the head temple of the Tendai Jimon school and a representative old temple of Ōmi that preserves numerous cultural properties, including the National Treasure Kondo (Golden Hall). The bell, known as the "Bell of Mii" among the Ōmi Hakkei scenic spots, is counted among Japan's three most famous bells. The spacious grounds surrounded by greenery are perfect for a morning stroll. Climbing to the high ground where Kannon Hall stands—a temple of the Western Thirty-Three Kannon Pilgrimage—you'll see Lake Biwa and Otsu's town spread out below, and spotting the paddle wheeler Michigan you'll soon be boarding adds to the fun. While there are stone steps and slopes, a leisurely walk with children allows you to experience both the quietness of an ancient temple and lake views at once. In spring, it's also famous as a cherry blossom viewing spot.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Miidera Station on the Keihan Ishiyama-Sakamoto Line, and also accessible on foot from Biwa-ko Hamaotsu Station. There's a paid parking lot near the temple entrance. Picking up a temple map at the admission office makes navigation easier. The climb to Kannon Hall has stone steps, so a baby carrier is reassuring for small children. Baby strollers are best used in the flat area around the Kondo.
