At Saiji Temple, Family Temple of Akechi Mitsuhide, Gaze Upon the Garden and Quietly Conclude Your Day
About this spot
The head temple of the Tendai Shinsho sect, traditionally said to have been founded by Prince Shotoku, commanding over 400 branch temples nationwide. It is known as the temple closely associated with Akechi Mitsuhide, who worked to restore it after Mount Hiei was set ablaze, becoming lord of Sakamoto Castle. The temple grounds quietly house the graves of Mitsuhide and his family, as well as his wife Hirosuko. The guest hall and various gardens, said to have been relocated from the former Fushimi Castle residence, are impressive and richly varied. The substantial main hall, constructed entirely of Japanese cypress, is designated as an Important Cultural Property. Situated on high ground with a distant view of Lake Biwa, the temple grounds are particularly beautiful in the evening light. Offering prayers while gazing upon the gardens allows you to fully savor the lingering emotions of a day spent tracing through history.
Tips
About 20 minutes on foot from Hiyoshi Taisha; bus service is also available from JR Hiei-san-Sakamoto Station and Keihan Sakamoto Hiei-san-guchi Station. A free parking lot for visitors is available. Admission: ¥500 for adults. Since you remove your shoes when entering the guest hall and main hall, slip-on shoes are convenient. Visitor reception closes relatively early in the evening, so visit with adequate time to spare.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Late afternoon, when western sunlight illuminates the gardens, offers a serene, contemplative atmosphere.
