Savor Freshly Baked Baumkuchen at the Grass-Roofed Main Shop
About this spot
The flagship store of Taneya Group, which operates both "Taneya" and "Club Harie," features a distinctive grass-roofed main shop designed by architect Fujimori Terunobu. The landscape feels as though you've stepped into a storybook, and you won't be able to stop taking photos. At the main shop, you can watch craftsmen bake baumkuchen right before your eyes, and at the adjoining cafe, you can taste the freshly baked goodness with its signature fluffy texture right on the spot. A rice field spreads across the center of the grounds, with a gift shop and food court in the Food Garage offering plenty to explore. This Shiga prefecture must-see draws millions of visitors annually and is a pilgrimage site for any sweets lover.
Tips
From JR Omihachiman Station (JR近江八幡駅), take a bus heading to Chomeiji Temple for about 10 minutes and get off at "Kitanoshō La Collina Mae" (北之庄 ラ コリーナ前). Free parking is available, so traveling by car is hassle-free. The freshly baked baumkuchen cafe tends to have lines from mid-morning, so arriving right when the shop opens is your best bet. Since freshly baked baumkuchen has a shelf life of one day, bringing a cooler bag is reassuring if you plan to take some home.
Best time to visit
Plan for approximately 1 hour 45 minutes. Arriving first thing in the morning when the shop opens allows you to enjoy freshly baked baumkuchen without waiting.
