Pray for Safe Travel at the Head Shrine of Sarutahiko Ōkami. Don't Miss Kanae Waterfall and the Garden

About this spot

This is the head shrine of Sarutahiko Ōkami, worshipped at approximately 2,000 shrines nationwide, and is an ancient shrine with about 2,000 years of history as the foremost shrine of Ise Province. Known as the "deity of pathfinding," it is revered for its benefit of guiding matters in a positive direction, drawing visitors from across the country. The approach lined with towering cedar trees has fresh morning air—perfect for beginning your drive with a prayer for safe travel. Within the shrine grounds are the Tsubaki Kishi Shrine, a separate shrine popular for matchmaking; "Kanae Waterfall" (かなえ滝), said to grant wishes captured in photographs; and "Suzuka-so Thatched Tea House" (鈴松庵) and its garden, donated by Matsushita Kōnosuke. This shrine offers plenty to see. Start your day in Suzuka with your vehicle-loving companions by praying for safe travel here.

Tips

By car, it's about 10 minutes from Suzuka IC on the Tōmei-Hanwa Expressway, with free parking for several hundred vehicles. By public transport, take the Mie Kōtsū bus from Kintetsu Yonkaichi Station for about 55 minutes to the final stop. Traffic safety amulets and stickers are available in many varieties, making it fun to choose one for each companion's vehicle. Avoid midday on New Year's and weekends when it gets crowded; visiting early in the morning is recommended for a peaceful atmosphere.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1 hour. Early morning is when the approach is quietest and the air clearest, allowing you to start the day refreshed after your safety prayer.
