Iga's symbol, famous for its roughly 30-meter-high stone walls built by Tōdō Takatsugu, recognized as among Japan's highest. The current main tower is a beautiful three-story wooden structure rebuilt in 1935 with the personal funds of local politician Katsushi Kawasaki, earning the affectionate name Hakuhō Castle (White Phoenix Castle). The interior displays armor, weapons, and other treasures related to the Tōdō clan, and from the top floor, you can enjoy sweeping 360-degree views of the Iga castle town and basin. The vista of the moat viewed from atop the stone walls is breathtaking—so thrilling that children will lean out in wonder, so please hold their hands. Located in Ueno Park at the heart of the castle town, surrounded by beautiful cherry blossoms, fresh green foliage, and autumn leaves, this castle is the perfect starting point for your ninja country exploration.
Tips
About 8 minutes on foot from Iga Railway Ueno-Shi Station, located in Ueno Park. If driving, parking at the municipal parking lot near Danjiri Hall (fee applies) is convenient for walking around all the park attractions. The interior features old-fashioned steep wooden stairs, so hold your small child's hand at each step. Leave strollers at the tower entrance and carry small children up instead—highly recommended. The tower is least crowded right after opening, allowing you to enjoy the views from the top floor at a leisurely pace.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early morning right after opening is the least crowded time, allowing you to leisurely enjoy the views of the castle town from the top floor.
