View the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Floats and Demon Masks of the Ueno Tenjin Festival

About this spot

An exhibition hall where you can experience year-round the world of the Ueno Tenjin Festival, registered as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Inside, magnificent floats (danjiri) actually paraded during the festival are displayed in all their splendor, and you can view up close the masks and costumes of the demon procession, including the hirefuri demons. Surrounded by large video displays and the sounds of festival music, you'll feel the very energy of the autumn festival. The intricate gold-thread decorations of the danjiri are impressive to adult visitors as well, and the impressive demon masks will captivate children—whether marveling or being slightly frightened, these reactions become wonderful travel memories. The hall also features a ninja costume rental shop and gift shop, plus a tourist information center, making it the perfect final stop to cap off your Iga day.

Tips

About 5 minutes on foot from Ueno-Shi Station, near the entrance to Ueno Park with an adjacent municipal parking lot. Parking here and walking around all day is the most convenient option. Admission is charged for the hall, but the attached tourist information center and gift shop are free to use. If you rent costumes at the in-house ninja costume rental shop, an early visit in the morning so you can spend the whole day as ninja throughout the castle town is hugely popular with children. The flat interior is easy to navigate with a stroller.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. Since closing time is in the early evening, an afternoon visit makes a perfect conclusion to your castle town exploration.
