Experience Hand-Weaving of Beautiful Indigo-Striped Matsusaka Cotton and Select Souvenirs

About this spot

An experiential facility preserving the tradition of Matsusaka Cotton—indigo-dyed striped woven fabric that symbolizes Edo sophistication. The facility houses traditional hand looms, and with guidance from staff, visitors can try authentic weaving. As you work the loom's rhythmic motion, indigo-striped patterns gradually weave together—children become absorbed, while grandparents may feel a nostalgic connection, making this an activity all three generations can enjoy. The shop carries both bolts of Matsusaka cotton fabric and affordable small items like coin purses and pouches, perfect for selecting travel souvenirs. This specialty product, which was once the aspiration of common people in the Edo era and supported the prosperity of the merchant town Matsusaka, can be experienced directly here.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Matsusaka Station, located in the same downtown area as the Oshiro-ban Yashiki and Gyugin Honten, accessible on foot. Since the weaving looms have limited capacity, advance reservations for the experience are recommended. Museum admission itself is free, so families not participating in the weaving can still enjoy shopping and viewing. Beginners are taught carefully, so children and seniors alike can participate with confidence.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1.5 hours. The afternoon after lunch is ideal for a relaxed experience and convenient for selecting souvenirs to conclude your journey.
