About this spot

The Tamon Turret of Ise Kameyama Castle is designated as a historic site of the prefecture and is the only existing castle structure in Mie. Standing atop the high stone wall of the southeastern corner of the main enclosure where the tenshu (main tower) is said to have been located, it was restored to its late Edo appearance during major renovation work in the Heisei era. There are abundant angles worthy of the camera: looking up at the white-walled turret from below the stone wall, or viewing the castle town from beside the turret itself. When bathed in the evening sun, the white walls take on a subtle glow—especially photogenic. Just a 15-minute drive from Sekijuku, this spot allows you to fully appreciate Kameyama's dual identity as both a post town and castle town, making it a perfect conclusion to your day of Tokaido exploration.

Tips

About 15 minutes by car from Sekijuku; by train, take the JR Kansai Main Line one station from Seki to Kameyama, then about a 10-minute walk. Exterior viewing is free and open to the public. Access to the turret's interior is limited to weekends and holidays primarily, so check opening dates in advance if you wish to enter. The surrounding area is developed as a park with parking and restroom facilities.

Best time to visit

Allow approximately 1 hour. The late afternoon, when the white walls are bathed in warm sunlight, is most photogenic. If you want to view the interior, visit during daylight on a public opening day.
