View the Tower Clock That Still Keeps Time and Explore the Interior Exhibits

Built in the early Meiji period as the exercise hall for the former Sapporo Agricultural School, this is one of Sapporo's most iconic historic structures. The clock tower above still keeps accurate time with a mechanism made by the American Howard Clock Company, and its chiming bells have long been a familiar part of the city's soundscape. The building, designated as a National Important Cultural Property, operates as a museum where visitors can learn about the history of the Sapporo Agricultural School and the Clock Tower on the first floor, while the second floor features a reconstructed hall of the original exercise hall. On the second floor, there's a popular photo spot with a statue of Dr. William S. Clark, where visitors can sit beside him for a memorable photo. Despite its location among modern buildings, the pioneer-era spirit of this place is unmistakably alive, making it a location where grandparents will want to share its history with their grandchildren.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from the Akarenga Building, located along the way to Odori Park. Admission is 200 yen for adults and free for high school students and younger. There's a viewing terrace on the 2nd floor of the building across the street, which offers the best angle for photographing the entire structure. Please note there are stairs inside, so take care with elderly family members' footing.
Best time to visit
Plan for about 40 minutes. Morning is less crowded with tour groups, allowing you to view the exhibits at a more relaxed pace.
