A 3-Minute Aerial Ride to the Summit—Twinkling Night Views at Sunset
About this spot
The highlight of Hakodate sightseeing, this ropeway connects to the 334-meter summit of Hakodate Mountain in about 3 minutes. As the large 125-person gondola gains altitude, Hakodate's streets and harbor gradually spread out below. From the summit observation deck, the view encompasses Hakodate Bay and the Tsugaru Strait, with city lights twinkling on the uniquely slender sandbar pinched between two seas—a night view found nowhere else. This scenery is also known for earning three stars in Michelin Green Guide Japan. The ideal approach is to arrive at the summit before sunset and experience the magic hour as the sky transforms from crimson to deep blue to a jewel-box-like night view. This is the perfect special sight for you both to enjoy together as you cap off the day.
Tips
The mountain-base station is about 10 minutes walk from Juujigai streetcar stop, or you can walk down the Motomachi slopes from the Former Hakodate Ward Public Hall. The gondola and observation deck are crowded around sunset, so arrive with time to spare. Even in summer, the summit is windy and cool, so don't forget a jacket. Operations may be suspended during high winds, so check the day's operational status.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1.5 hours. Arrive at the summit about 30 minutes before sunset, and enjoy the transition from evening to night scenery.
