Leisurely Walk Around the Star-Shaped Earthen Ramparts and Moat, Tracing the Angles You Saw from Above with Your Own Feet
About this spot
A park developed on the site of Goryokaku, Japan's first Western-style fortress built by the Edo shogunate in connection with the opening of Hakodate, designated as a Special Historic Site of Japan. The five-pointed star projections and wide moat were constructed using European fortification techniques adapted for the age of cannon. Crossing the bridges over the moat—passing the First Bridge and Second Bridge—and walking the promenade atop the elevated earthen ramparts allow you to now literally trace with your own feet the pointed angles of the star you observed from the tower. The park is lush with greenery and has plenty of benches, making it welcoming for families with small children to explore at their own pace. This is Hakodate's premier relaxation spot where you can experience the historical site of the Boshin War in a picnic-like atmosphere.
Tips
Admission is free; you can enter directly across the bridge right next to the tower. The park is surprisingly large when you walk around it completely, so comfortable walking shoes are essential. Shops and restrooms are scattered throughout the park. Since some sections of the earthen rampart lack railings, be sure to keep an eye on small children.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour 15 minutes. The cool morning hours are most comfortable for walking, and shaded walks are pleasant.
