"Twin Beauty Waterfall" Splitting into Two Streams: The Opening Chapter of Shiretoko Sightseeing
About this spot
Appearing along National Route 334 on the way from the Shari city center to Utoro, this is Shiretoko's largest-class waterfall. Because the water flow splits into two partway down, it is also called the "Twin Beauty Waterfall" and was selected as one of "Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls." Climbing stairs from the parking area leads to an observation deck at mid-height of the waterfall, where you can experience the powerful water sliding down the wide rock face up close. Looking back, the Sea of Okhotsk spreads below, and this is the only place where you can view both waterfall and sea at once—a true luxury. Positioned at the gateway to Shiretoko sightseeing, it's perfect for stopping on your first thing in the morning when arriving in Utoro. During snowmelt season or after rain, the water volume increases, revealing an even more impressive sight.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Utoro city center; a free parking area, shop, and restroom are located along National Route 334. The observation deck requires climbing stairs for a few minutes, so wear comfortable shoes. Mist may spray near the waterfall, so it's wise to protect your camera or smartphone. The early morning hours before tour buses arrive offer a quieter experience than daytime.
