About this spot
Located right next to Aomori Station, this museum of the Aomori Nebuta Festival features a striking exterior wrapped in red steel louvers. The main nebuta hall displays large nebuta floats that actually paraded in the festival, allowing you to fully appreciate the power of 5-meter-high warrior paintings from directly below and up close. In addition to exhibits introducing nebuta history and manufacturing techniques, there are interactive corners where you can try your hand at paper-pasting and designated time slots for live festival music performances and traditional dance experiences. The greatest appeal is that you can experience the festive energy of the nebuta even outside of the festival season. The hall's dimly lit interior with illuminated nebuta creating a floating effect means virtually every photo captures drama. For first-time visitors to Aomori, this is the classic place to start.
Tips
Located just a 1-minute walk from the East Exit of JR Aomori Station with excellent access. Festival music performances and other stage events have set times, so check the schedule at entry for efficiency. The dimly lit interior makes smartphone night mode very useful. To avoid crowds, visiting right after opening is recommended.
Best time to visit
About 1.5 hours required. Late morning after opening is less crowded, allowing you to photograph the large nebuta floats in detail.
