Encounter Thousands of Traditional Kokeshi Dolls and a Giant Kokeshi, and Try Hand-Painting
About this spot
An exhibition and experience facility for kokeshi dolls located at the entrance to Kuroishi's Hot Spring Village and Kokeshi Village. Inside, thousands of traditional kokeshi dolls from the local Tsugaru style and throughout Japan are displayed in rows, and as you compare the different expressions and patterns unique to each production area, you'll find yourself drawn deeper into the profound simplicity of these wooden dolls. The towering giant kokeshi in the main hall that greets visitors is a classic photo spot. The gift shop sells kokeshi made by artisans and Tsugaru folk crafts, and by trying the hand-painting experience, you can create a unique work to take home—painting a face and patterns on a blank kokeshi with a brush. You may even encounter artisans demonstrating their work on the potter's wheel, making this the main attraction of the Kokeshi village walk where you can genuinely feel the warmth of Tsugaru's traditional craftsmanship.
Tips
Located in the Fukuro district of the Kokeshi village, about 15 minutes by car from Kuroishi city center via Route 102. It's standard to visit together with the nearby Tsugaru Traditional Crafts Museum (津軽伝承工芸館). The hand-painting experience takes 30 minutes to 1 hour, so allow plenty of time before registering. Since finished works can be taken home as-is, it's helpful to have a bag for your souvenir.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour and 15 minutes. If doing the hand-painting experience, it's best to arrive early in the afternoon to ensure you have time.
