A long-established soba restaurant since the Meiji era, renowned nationwide as a leading venue for wanko soba, Morioka's signature dish. As the server cheerfully chants "Hai, janjan!" or "Hai, dondon!" one-portion bowlfuls of soba are rapidly tossed into your bowl, and refills continue until you place the lid on your bowl. Roughly 15 bowls equal one serving of regular kake soba, and exceeding 100 bowls earns you a commemorative certificate, naturally turning the table into a competitive arena full of excitement. Varying the flavor with diverse toppings—such as tuna sashimi, shredded chicken, and grated nameko—keeps the experience fun. Competing with friends on bowl count transforms Morioka's food culture into the ultimate entertainment.
Tips
About 5 minutes walk from Iwate Bank Red Brick Hall, the main branch sits on Nakanohashi-dori. During peak tourist season and weekends it gets crowded, so advance reservations or arriving right after opening is wise. For wanko soba, eat a light breakfast, wear loose-fitting clothes, and come with an empty stomach—these are the golden rules.
Best time to visit
Allow about 1.5 hours. Arriving shortly after opening, before the lunch rush, means shorter waits and a more relaxed challenge.
