A 90-minute round-trip boat cruise through cliffs 100 meters high, captivated by the boatman's traditional song "Geibi Oiwake"

About this spot

A roughly 2-kilometer gorge carved by the Sattetsu River into limestone rock walls, Geibikei is counted among Japan's hundred most scenic views and represents one of Iwate's premier scenic destinations. The highlight is a boat cruise aboard flat-bottomed boats poled by hand. Without using an engine, a 90-minute round-trip journey where the boatman's song "Geibi Oiwake" echoes off 100-meter cliffs creates a timeless moment where time seems to flow slowly. At the turning point, you can disembark and stroll to the scenic spot Dai-Geibihana Rock (大猊鼻岩), where trying your luck by tossing "fortune balls" (運玉) into rock crevices is popular. The scenery shifts with each season—fresh green in spring, deep green in summer, autumn foliage, and heated boats in winter—and the early morning when only the boat's wake ripples across the calm water is particularly special. Since it's not a rapid-water descent, it's perfect for couples who want to savor the scenery leisurely.

Tips

From JR Ofunato Line Geibikei Station, it's about a 5-minute walk to the boarding point; by car from Ichinoseki IC, it takes about 30 minutes and there is free parking. The boats have roofs, but it can be cold on the water, so bringing a light jacket is reassuring. During peak foliage season and holidays, there can be waits; the first morning boat is the best bet. Operations may be suspended during high water, so if weather is uncertain, check operational status in advance.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour 45 minutes total (90-minute round-trip boat cruise plus wait time). The first morning boat, when the river surface is calm and light is soft, is recommended.
