Board a Sappa-sen Fishing Boat to the Mysterious Blue Grotto (Hachinoana)
About this spot
A tourist hub on Jodo-ga-hama's beach, famous for boat tours through the Blue Grotto aboard a traditional small fishing boat (sappa-sen). Locally called "Hachinoana," this sea cave has light entering the cave reflecting off the water surface, creating a mystical scene where the water shimmers in cobalt blue. Operated by a skilled boatman, the sappa-sen is a small vessel where you feel very close to the water, and the journey to the cave offers a thrilling mini-cruise with dramatic views of the rocky cliffs. Sea gulls often come close to the boat, and children are sure to be delighted. Once you put on a life jacket and board, the whole family enjoys a small adventure. This experience becomes the highlight of the day.
Tips
Sappa-sen tours are first-come, first-served, and may be canceled depending on weather and wave conditions. Wear a life jacket and helmet while boarding; bring a towel or something to wear as water spray may splash. Small children should be securely held by adults.
Best time to visit
Approximately 45 minutes (boat ride approximately 20 minutes). Early morning to midday offers the best chance to see the cave's blue shimmer as light enters
