About this spot

This vast lava field, about 3 km long and 1 km wide, was formed when lava that flowed during an Edo-period eruption of Mt. Iwate cooled and solidified in place. Designated a Special Natural Monument of Japan, the sight of the black sea of rock - where almost no plants have grown even some 300 years after the eruption - covering the foothills of Mt. Iwate is simply overwhelming. A roughly 1-km nature observation trail runs through the lava flow, and as you walk the rugged rocky path, you can immerse yourself in an otherworldly landscape: the imposing form of Mt. Iwate behind you, and nothing but black earth and sky ahead. This is a highlight of the second half of the drive, offering a glimpse of the raw, rugged face of the volcano in contrast to the greenery of Mt. Hachimantai.

Tips

About 50 minutes by car from the Hachimantai summit; you can enter the observation trail from the parking lot at Yakebashiri International Exchange Village (焼走り国際交流村). Some parts of the rocky ground are unstable underfoot, so wear comfortable shoes such as sneakers. There is no shade along the observation trail, so it's a good idea to bring a hat and something to drink.

Best time to visit

About 1 hour. Late afternoon, when the setting sun highlights the ridgeline of Mt. Iwate, is especially photogenic.
