A bay-circling sightseeing boat that is virtually synonymous with Matsushima, one of Japan's Three Scenic Spots. The Niōmaru course departing from the Matsushima Coast boarding area completes its approximately 50-minute route by weaving through more than 260 large and small islands. Islands include Niōjima, shaped like a Niō statue by erosion from rough waves, and Kaneshima, where the sound of waves hitting rock holes echoes like bell chimes according to legend. Each island has distinctive character as you observe them while recalling the origins of their names. The on-board announcement guides you to points of interest, so even first-timers can enjoy the experience. Since the boat has a cabin with seating that allows leisurely viewing, grandparents with concerns about walking or standing can feel at ease. The spectacular Matsushima views that can only be encountered from the sea are the perfect opening highlight for a three-generation journey.
Tips
About a 5-minute walk from JR Senseki Line Matsushima Kaigan Station to the boarding area. Boats depart on the hour, and morning departures are relatively uncrowded. During holidays and peak tourism season, crowds can build, so earlier departures are recommended. The deck experiences strong sea breezes, so bringing a light layer is recommended even in summer.
