Stroll Through the Natori River Ravine with Striking Rock Formations on the Walking Trail, Including a Search for Heart-Shaped Hollows

Starting from Nozoki Bridge (覗橋), the entrance to Akiu Onsen, the Rairai Gorge (磊々峡) is a ravine carved deep by the Natori River into towering rocks on both banks. "Rairai" is a word meaning the piling up of rocks, and true to its name, striking and unusual rock formations stretch for about 1 km and can be viewed up close from the walking trail running along the river. The heart-shaped hollow on the rocks at the base of Nozoki Bridge is known as a "Lovers' Sacred Place" and is a popular photo spot—a must-find for couples and married visitors. Whether visiting during the season of fresh green leaves or autumn foliage, simply walking the dappled sunlight path while listening to the flowing water is enough to ease one's heart. It is a scenic gem befitting the opening of an Akiu walk.
Tips
About 30 minutes by car from Sendai Station; the parking areas around Nozoki Bridge and Akiu-Sato Center make convenient starting points. The walking trail has rocky terrain and stairs, so wear comfortable shoes. After rain, the footing can be slippery, so be careful. The riverside is cooler than the city, so having an extra layer to wear is reassuring.
Best time to visit
Allow approximately 1 hour. Early morning is quietest, and the sight of dappled sunlight filtering into the ravine is particularly beautiful.
