View the Unloading Scene from the Observation Deck – Morning at Japan's Premier Port

About this spot

Kesennuma's signature fish market, boasting one of Japan's leading records in fresh bonito landings. Known for landing a diverse array of fish—bonito, swordfish, mackerel, and shark species—the sight of fishing boats moored alongside the wharf with fish being lined up one after another is a spectacle unique to a harbor town. An observation deck open to the public allows visitors to freely watch the unloading and auction from above. The orderly arrangement of fish by type and the animated auction calls create a scene that is educational in itself for children, offering a firsthand sense of how the fish on your table makes its way from sea to shore. The view of Kesennuma Bay from the deck is also refreshing, making it a fitting start to a harbor town's day.

Tips

Unloading and auctions are centered in the early morning through late morning, so visiting as early as possible is recommended. Unloading varies by weather and fishing conditions, so the scene differs day to day. Viewing from the deck is a courtesy matter—be careful not to obstruct the work of market staff. Parking is available. The floor may be wet, so non-slip shoes are advisable.

Best time to visit

Approximately 1 hour. To see the bustling activity of unloading and auctions, visit first thing in the morning or by late morning at the latest.
