A Spectacular Final View at One of Sanriku's Premier Scenic Spots Where Waves Crash Through Split Rocks
About this spot
Located at the border between Minami-Sanriku Town and Ishinomaki City, this is one of the representative scenic spots of Sanriku Reconstruction National Park. Massive split rocks face the Pacific, with surging waves crashing between them in a spray of white foam—a powerful sight. Legend has it that in ancient times, two villages quarreled over a whale washed ashore, and rocks split overnight to mark the boundary between them, giving the cape its name. A footpath winds through a pine grove on the promontory, offering pleasant walks accompanied by the sound of waves. While known as a spectacular sunrise viewing spot between the rocks, the evening seascape illuminated by soft light is equally beautiful, offering a dramatic and fitting finale to your coastal town tour.
Tips
About 20 minutes by car from Sansan Shopping Street; there is free parking from which you walk the footpath to the viewpoint. The area along the cliff can be uneven underfoot, so wear sturdy shoes and stay within barriers. Bring a layer if the sea wind is strong. The adjacent Kamiwari Cape Campground (神割崎キャンプ場) has shops and toilets.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Waves are more dramatic on windy days, and the rock surfaces illuminated by evening's slanting light are especially photogenic.
