A crater lake nestled quietly in the mountains south of Nariko Onsen. According to tradition, it was formed by volcanic activity approximately 1,200 years ago and is known worldwide as one of the most highly acidic lakes. Because the acidity is so strong, fish cannot survive, making the water remarkably clear. Depending on weather and light conditions, the lake surface shifts mysteriously from emerald green to deep lapis lazuli blue. With a circumference of roughly 1.3 kilometers, the small lake is perfect for a leisurely lakeside stroll where you can sense the volcano's breath alongside the subtle scent of sulfur. The tranquility of the early evening as daylight fades is incomparable—the perfect conclusion to your day, Nariko's hidden gem.
Tips
About 10 minutes by car from Nariko Onsen Station. The narrow mountain road climbs steadily, so drive carefully (hiking would take about 40 minutes of uphill walking). The lakeside rest house operates seasonally; bring your own beverages for safety. As this is a volcanic zone, always follow all posted restricted-area warnings.
Best time to visit
Approximately 1 hour. Early evening as the sun begins to set offers the best view of the lake's shifting colors and a peaceful way to conclude your day.
