Wandering the Greenery of Kuboта Castle Ruins and Overlooking Akita from the Gosumi Turret

About this spot

This symbolic park in central Akita City has been developed on the ruins of Kuboта Castle, the seat of the Satake clan rulers of the 200,000-koku Akita Domain. Kuboта Castle was an unusual flat-topped mountain castle without stone walls or a central tower—the earthen embankments and moats convey its original appearance. Throughout the park stand the reconstructed main gate and the Gomotokashira Banansho, which survives from the feudal period. From the observation room in the Gosumi Turret atop the hon-maru (inner citadel), you can see a panoramic view of Akita City—a perfect photo spot. The sloped path from the moat's edge to the main gate is embraced by trees, revealing different faces through the seasons. Known as a cherry blossom, azalea, and lotus viewing site, a stroll appreciating seasonal flowers is perfect for couples. It's an easy walk from the station, making this the core spot of your town walk, where you can experience the history of the castle town of Akita.

Tips

About a 10-minute walk from Akita Station; easily accessible on foot from the Akita Citizen's Market as well. Park grounds are free to explore; entry to the Gosumi Turret is a small fee (around 100 yen). Many paths are sloped or unpaved, so wear comfortable walking shoes. The turret has winter closures, so check opening periods if you wish to ascend to the observation room.

Best time to visit

Allow about 1.5 hours. An early morning stroll when the air is crisp feels refreshing, and the view from the turret will be clear.
